Rowland S. Howard was one of the most distinctive and influential musicians Australia has ever produced.
With his Fender Jaguar guitar he created his own immediately recognisable sonic language of sharp, sometimes brutal emotional intensity while winning hearts with his soul-baring lyrics laced with love, heartbreak and longing.
In 1977, at the age of 16, Rowland emerged as a key figure in Melbourne’s post punk scene, writing the hit Shivers, a tongue in cheek anthem of teenage angst. After The Young Charlatans, his brilliant but short-lived first band, Rowland moved to London with Nick Cave forming the Birthday Party, then forming Crime & the City Solution, and his own These Immortal Souls. There were also projects with Lydia Lunch and Nikki Sudden before he eventually returned to Australia to make two powerful and unforgettable solo albums.
By the time of his death in 2009, Rowland’s career was truly international. It had spanned thirty-four years, spawned countless notable collaborations, and he left us with a blazing legacy that continues to inspire artists and musicians all over the globe.
October 24th 2019 would have marked Rowland’s 60th birthday, 40 years since his musical debut, 20 years since his masterpiece “Teenage Snuff Film”, and 10 years since the release, weeks before he died, of his final album “Pop Crimes”. In honour of these milestones, we are happy to announce synchronised worldwide re-releases of both Pop Crimes and Teenage Snuff Film, with Mute Records in the UK and Europe, Fat Possum in America, and Bloodlines in Australia & NZ.
The show “Pop Crimes” was first performed in Melbourne in 2011, at the All Tomorrow’s Parties Festival 2013, plus two shows to mark his 5 year anniversary at Melbourne Festival 2014.
Many original members of Rowland’s bands and other key collaborators from his illustrious career will be coming together on stage for what is sure to be an electrifying celebration of this music icon.
FEATURING Mick Harvey (The Bad Seeds, The Birthday Party, PJ Harvey), J.P. Shilo (Rowland S. Howard, Hungry Ghosts), Harry Howard (These Immortal Souls), Genevieve McGuckin (These Immortal Souls), Chris Hughes, with Conrad Standish replacing Brian Hooper on bass.
Special guests will include Bobby Gillespie (Primal Scream), Jonnine Standish (HTRK), Lydia Lunch, Edwina Preston, with more to be announced.

Mick Harvey has announced a tour throughout October and November 2019 with dates split into two separate and very special performances: The Songs of Serge Gainsbourg and a double bill with close collaborator J.P. Shilo which will see Harvey perform songs from across his solo albums.
The Songs of Serge Gainsbourg dates, which start in France, will feature Mick Harvey, J.P. Shilo, Xanthe Waite, James Johnston, Toby Dammit and Yoyo Röhm performing Harvey’s interpretations from across four album releases which saw Harvey translating the work of Gainsbourg, starting in 1995 with Intoxicated Man through to Intoxicated Women (2017).
At the end of October (with three UK shows in Newcastle, London and Glasgow) Mick Harvey will present songs from his four solo albums, One Man’s Treasure (2005), Two of Diamonds (2007), Sketches from the Book of the Dead (2011) and Four (2013).
For this section of the tour, the former Bad Seed will join forces on a double bill with his close collaborator J.P. Shilo (Hungry Ghosts / Rowland S. Howard / The Blackeyed Susans) and a band including Glenn Lewis (Cambodian Space Project) on bass and Steve Shelley (Sonic Youth) on drums. Shilo will be performing material from his new album Invisible You due for European release in October while Harvey will take the opportunity to include selections from the recent album The Fall and Rise of Edgar Bourchier and the Horrors of War , his collaboration with Christopher Richard Barker (Mute, 2018).
One Man’s Treasure and Two of Diamonds will be released on vinyl for the first time in November 2019.
